Inside the Label: Lessons from Building a Music Label

Building a successful music label (or any business) has never been a simple job. It asks for clear decisions, strong relationships and the ability to keep adapting when the way people listen to music changes.
Over the last few decades, that change in the industry has been huge. For labels, the shift from physical to digital changed almost everything overnight, from how music is released and advertised to how opportunities are spotted.
That is why we're introducing Inside the Label, a new video series from Ameritz featuring Founder and Managing Director Dave Green. Each week, Dave shares what he has learned from building Ameritz, looking at the business decisions, challenges and turning points behind building a business.
Episode 1: From Shop to International Music Label
The first episode looks back at Ameritz’s move from the world of physical music into the digital music industry.
For a label, the shift to digital meant learning how to work with new systems and new expectations. Releases no longer lived only on shelves. They now lived in servers, search results, playlists and recommendation systems, and as Ameritz discovered, International reach became more exciting, but also vastly more complex.

Episode 2: From Shop to International Music Label
The second episode turns to one of the most useful tools available to labels today: data.
Streaming and the internet has created access to information that previous generations of music businesses and labels did not have in the same way. Labels like Ameritz can see how tracks perform in real time, where listeners are based, when interest rises in certain genres and which releases continue to perform day after day.
Data can guide decisions, but it does not remove judgement. A strong label learns to combine numbers with context, taste and practical business sense.

Episode 3: Business Costs and the £25,000 Server Bill
For labels like Ameritz, understanding where the money goes is a key part of running a sustainable business. Some costs are easy to anticipate, while others can have a much bigger impact on the bottom line than you might expect.
In the third episode of Inside the Label, Dave Green explores the costs of running a music business and reveals which expense is one of the biggest for us.
